In July, with the help of many enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, we bagged 2,000 pounds of cured oyster shells, putting them inside biodegradable bags and then placing them into 60 Oyster Reef Balls (orbs). These orbs were deployed into the shallow waters off of Heron’s Head Park.
The structures serve as substrate for a living Olympia oyster reef — a reef that filters the water, provides food and habitat for other species and protects the shoreline.
