At Wild Oyster Project, shells play a vital role in our mission. Shells help us create thriving habitats for marine life, particularly baby oysters who prefer to dwell on the backs of older shells. These beautiful reefs not only provide a safe haven for oysters but also contribute to the overall health and biodiversity here in the Bay!
However before we introduce these recycled shells into the water, we must cure or clean them under the warm sun for a period of two years. This meticulous process ensures that the shells are free from any contaminants and ready for various projects.
To accomplish this we must forge valuable partnerships with various locations that also house chickens. Our feathered friends are of utmost importance to the Wild Oyster Project. With their meticulous pecking, they clean our recycled shells very throughly. The symbiotic relationship we have developed with these birds is truly remarkable. While they relish the nutritious snack, we gain immaculate shells that are ready to contribute to our shell mounds. It’s a win-win!
